The Cyclone Check-In survey is administered to all Iowa State University undergraduate students during the fourth week of each semester. The survey link is sent via email to students with several reminder emails to follow. The due date for the fall 2026 semester is Monday, October 5. Results from this survey provide rich data to understand what Cyclones are experiencing as they settle into their coursework and acclimate to campus life.
Over the last decade, versions of this survey have been administered to students to help understand how they are adjusting to Iowa State University and to identify areas of need and support for these students. The survey has two tracks: one for new-to-ISU students and one for returning students. The survey measures the following: sense of belonging, social and academic integration, preparedness and resilience, help-seeking, overall experience, challenges and struggles, food security, and reasons for attending Iowa State University. The survey has had an impressive response rate over the years, generally over 30%.
One unique feature of the Cyclone Check-In is the follow-up with students. Connections are issued in EAB Navigate for students based on self-reported challenges that students are experiencing. Students can explore available resources and schedule appointments with on-campus services that will help to address these concerns. Cyclone Support Specialists continue to offer support and follow-up for student concerns throughout the semester. The Academic Success Center, Office of Student Financial Aid, and Student Wellbeing Coaching were the top three connections made in fall 2025. The survey allows for early intervention when students have questions or concerns and increases awareness of services before a critical need arises.
